Temporary Housing

If you have neither friends nor relatives to take you in while you look for permanent housing, you could stay in a place that offers short-term housing.

If you opt for this solution, be sure to estimate your needs and your financial capability ahead of time. Are you alone, in a couple, or with your family? What amount do you think you can allot every month for rental housing?

You should know that because of supply and demand, the number of places is limited during peak season (from May to October), when prices are often higher. In some cases, the price is per night. However, most establishments offer attractive rates during low season (from November to April).

After choosing a place you like, reserve it right away, especially if you plan to settle in Québec City during high season.

To benefit from preferential treatment, tell the person you write or speak to that you are an immigrant.

Costs

If you intend to limit your expenses during the first days, student residences are a good option. Intended for students during the school year (from mid-August to the end of April), they are available to the general public during the summer (from May to mid-August).

Youth hostels are also suitable for short stays. In general, staying there is cheaper than staying in a hotel or motel.

If you can afford it, you can also opt for a studio apartment or a furnished and equipped apartment, available at certain hotels and a number of inns.

Those who prefer a family setting can stay with a foster family. Certain organizations offer this service. To contact them, consult the list of useful addresses. In return for a contribution, these families take in new immigrants for short periods.

Costs will vary depending on location and amenities. For example, a couple that chooses to stay in a student residence can expect to pay about $400 per month whereas opting for a furnished studio apartment will cost them between $550 and $1,500 monthly.
