Eco-Friendly, Vibrant, and Distinctive
Over the next few years, Québec City will be developing the
Pointe-aux-Lièvres and D’Estimauville
areas of the city into green neighborhoods.
A third green neighborhood project, Cité Verte,
is currently being led by SSQ Financial Group.
What Is a Green Neighborhood?
Green neighborhoods are built according to sustainable development
principles in order to reduce their ecological footprint.
Green neighborhood features:
- Innovative and sustainable architecture
Use of sustainable materials such as wood and products featuring
recycled fibers, superior insulation and weatherproofing, windows
facing the sun
Innovative, high-quality architecture offering a complete range of
features
- Water
Reduced use of potable water and improved rainwater management;
for example, to maintain green spaces and clean the streets
- Energy efficiency
Use of new technologies such as geothermal to heat and cool
buildings and renewable energy such as solar power
- Green spaces and waterways
Development of green spaces and planting of trees to limit the
heat generated by buildings and pavement
Protection of residents’ access to waterways
- Infrastructure
Public facilities upgrades including urban lighting, underground
cables, and green roofs
- Waste management
Integrated waste, recycling, and composting management to limit
truck traffic on neighborhood streets
- Mixed neighborhoods
A mix of housing, local goods and services, institutions,
recreational and tourism facilities, and community services to
create complete, autonomous neighborhoods
- Parking
Development of underground parking to maximize space and reduce
heat islands
Establishment of a limit on the number of parking spaces
Parking spaces reserved for carpooling and bicycles
- Transportation
Development of a road network designed to favor pedestrians
Promotion of public transit to reduce automobile use, air
pollution, energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions
Pedestrian and bicycle path network to promote active commuting
Residents in these new neighborhoods will enjoy a genuine community
environment in which they can walk to work and go shopping without a
car.
Located along Rivière Saint-Charles, the Pointe-aux-Lièvres neighborhood
will comprise 1,200 housing units in buildings ranging from five to nine
floors. This neighborhood, next to the Saint-Roch district, will attract
people who want to live close to their workplace.
There will be a large park (more than eight hectares) for year-round
sports and outdoor activities.
The D’Estimauville neighborhood will comprise 2,100 housing units
with direct access to the St. Lawrence River. It will breathe new life
into the area and reestablish a link between the Maizerets (La
Cité-Limoilou) and Vieux-Moulin (Beauport) neighborhoods.
Residents will enjoy an exceptional setting close to the river and
major recreational facilities like Domaine de Maizerets, Baie de
Beauport, and Corridor du Littoral.
More than 800 housing units will be developed in Cité Verte, located
in the Saint-Sacrement neighborhood. Spread out on a site of 93,000 m2,
the buildings will be organized around community facilities.
Cité Verte is a major multiple-residence project for the region in
terms of green and smart buildings, with more than $300 million in
investments.
The Cité Verte project is led by
SSQ Financial Group.
